ABOUT ST. LEO THE GREAT

Parish - A Short History

St. Leo the Great was founded in 1948 under the Pastoral leadership of Fr. Sylvester Lux. Over the past 57 years, the Parish has grown to nearly 2300 families. The current Church building was built in 1969. The original property extended south and was sold to the State of Ohio to allow the construction of Interstate 480. Fr. Lux was known as a good businessman, and was eventually able to purchase some of the property back from the State which saved the school building from having to be torn down. In appreciation of Fr. Lux's devotion to the Parish, the school gym is named in his honor. There have been four other Pastors at St. Leo's: Fr. John Fiala, Fr. William Eylar, Fr. Ned Weist, and Fr. Bob Bielek. The current and sixth Pastor is Fr. Russell P. Lowe, who became Pastor on June 30, 2004.

St. Leo the Great - A Short History

It is widely held that St. Leo the Great was born in Tuscany around the year 400. He served as Supreme Pontiff from 440 to 461. Throughout his Pontificate, Leo was known for his willingness to offer forgiveness to the repentant and that all acts should be done in charity. Leo firmly felt, that all he did and said as pope was inspired by and participated in by Jesus Christ. He was declared a Doctor of the Church after his death for his preaching and style of governance. Of his sermons still remain to this day.
